Rear End

Does anyone know if Ford has any intention of updating the rear axle on the Stangs? For me, the old school suspension and drivetrain has kept me away. I know there are some tuners out there that can "redo" the weak links so to speak but typically for a hefty cost!

According to Ford, the straight axel was kept for cost reasons. They thought the price increase to the base of a Mustang to have IRS would have slowed sales. Plus warranty claims on the terminators with IRS was also taken into account. Alot more stuff to break when a GT500 nails it.

The new 8.8" rear is quite stout. Does its job, and is cheap.

Anyhow, this car is so nose heavy ( yes I have had one of these too) an IRS wouldnt help it turn much anyway. All I remember is leaving a toll booth entering the PA turnpike and on a downhill left hand turn that was slightly banked, the car just plowed toward the embankment wall. Damn thing was trying to kill itself.
I kept it for 2 more weeks and got something else after that.

What year was it?

I was watching Top Gear and they were testing the GT500 and they said it was near impossible to take a turn on the track with the straight axel

It was an 05. The nose heaviness of the car has to be felt to be believed ( as a sports/ muscle car goes ) it is that bad. Why? I m not really sure. My boat of a 300C seemed better sorted around off camber corners than the Mustang. Must be something in the chassis design and engine placement. I'm no engineer.

I'm waiting to see the numbers on the new GT next year when it the 400 hp engine ( well it is supposed to )

Most of my mates who race their stangs (dragstrip) and have 500+ rwhp have gone through the stock rearends and have had to upgrade significantly.

We put in a Currie 9 inch and full spool. Transbrake launches and a ton of torque will eat up a stock rear. We shredded a trutrac before going to a spool. Now parallel parking is but a distant memory...lol

I just wish they would bring back Trans-Am racing. Would be nice to see more manufacturers make complete sports cars again. Look good, powerful, able to turn, good brakes. Now we are stuck with the Miata series as far as stock cars go. Even stock car racing isnt stock.

Would love to see chevy and ford sedans going at it.

A few of my friends that have stangs have all changed out their rears for upgraded ones, because as they say and don't stick this to me guys, but they say they can't handle the horse power once you hit 500HP, but again thats their word, just spreading here, LOL

I wonder what is going on them. Its a basic design and a solid axle. 500 hp is not that much. Now on slicks on a prepped track, any stock rear can blow. But for street use on DOT tires, you should lose traction before the stress on an axle or rear pops.
